The Probus Club of St Annes-on-the-Sea

Walter Smith
14 December 1925 - 13 January 2013

Walter was born in December 1925 in Golborne, near Wigan, so was 87 years old when he died.  His father worked for, and later became General Manager of, the local Co-op.

Walter served in the East Lancashire regiment and then in the Palestine Police, a force raised after WWII to keep the peace between the Arab states and the newly-formed State of Israel.  Later he became an engineer with a major national engineering company.

It was through that company that he came to live in this area but, when they ceased to exist, one of its employees started his own engineering business and Walter joined him, later becoming its Sales Director.

He was a member of our Club for over twenty years (since 1990, in fact),  As well as being a regular at our meetings Walter, together with his wife Hilda, was always at our Christmas lunches.  He was a member of the local Photographic Society for some years later in his life.  They lived at Lime Grove in St. Annes.

He leaves a wife Hilda, a son and a daughter.
