Western Approaches HQ, Liverpool

Imperial War Museum

Thursday 26 May 2022

On Thursday 26 May 2022, our new Social Secretary Peter Skinner led a group of eight Members,  visiting the Western Approaches HQ which is run by the Imperial War Museum.  The museum is located in central Liverpool and is based in the previously secret rooms used during WW2 to house the nerve centre of Naval & Air Operations guarding the approaches to the UK from the Atlantic Ocean throughout the Battle of the Atlantic and the entire war.  The Operations Room remains exactly how as it was left when the doors were closed in August 1945.

Since there were only eight of us on this first trip out (not enough for a minibus), we went in a couple of cars instead, ably piloted b by Peter Skinner and Keith Thorpe.

From the museum entrance we went down into the rabbit warren of rooms and corridors below. Very little of it was roped off and it was possible to handle many of the exhibits.  The photograph below was taken in the Central Operations room.  In the NAFFI area there was a help-yourself tea/coffee station (with biscuits!) and with tables and chairs, where the he heading photo (of us all) was taken.

We’d agreed we’d find dinner on the way back and, after Crosby but before Formby, we came across the Pheasant Inn in Hightown, which turned out to be a very good choice and we all left in good shape for the rest of the trip home!
